Canvassing for Obama in WI, meet the candidates, green stuff etc

Here is a report about last months RPM meeting and an update on activities in our area.

We had over 35 highly motivated attendees at our meeting learn how to take back our part of America. Special thanks goes to all the local organizers who spoke. (see summaries below). You certainly should be able to find something to get active with in the next 2 months.

Here are RPM’s activities and recommendations

1. Canvass for Obama in WI- RPM is doing its part in joining forces with the national Obama campaign and local organizers
When. Sat. Oct 4 and 18 8AM-5PM
Where: Beloit WI- meet at the IBEW Union parking lot (6820 Mill RD Rockford) at 8AM. RSVP to this email so we can plan transportation

2. Attend the (local and congressional) candidate forum sponsored by RUM, League of Women Voters and Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries.
When: Tues. September 23 7-9PM
Where: Good Sheperd Lutheran Church 1829 N Rockton Ave. Rockford

3. Join us at our Oct. RPM meeting. It will be a social gathering to support our US congressional candidate, Robert Abboud
What: open house to socialize and meet with Abboud, (other area Dem. candidates are also invited).
Where: Just Good Store 7th St. Rockford
When: Mon. Oct. 13. 6:30-8PM

Rockford Area Move-On

The Rockford MoveOn Council began last March with a rally on the fifth year anniversary of the Iraq War. Over 100 people gathered in downtown Rockford to protest the war on this evening candlelight occasion. Since then the Rockford MoveOn Council has held monthly gatherings in Rockford. In the spring and summer they dealt with the energy crisis and a call for clean alternative energy solutions. Our fall meetings will be devoted to doing work for the Obama campaign. We have about 60 members. If you would like to join the Rockford MoveOn Council, please contact our local coordinator Rufus

Green Communities Coalition
Allen Penticoff
Updates- held a very successful fundraising concert at Cliffbreakers on August 24th,with over 90 attending and taking in more than $1,000
Met with Rockford public works and discussed many ideas including an “anti-plastic bag campaign” and the feasibility of county/city fleets using hybrid cars and compressed natural gas usage including converting buses.
Success story- getting the mayor and city council to sign on to make Rockford a Green City

Next event- GCC Monthly meeting with speaker Brian Eber of the city public works department who will bring us up to date with all that is green going on with the city. We will also be discussing what projects GCC wants to take on in the near future. Details: Sunday Sept. 21st @ 6:00, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 920 Third Ave. Rockford. We start with a light potluck meal and begin the business meeting at 6:30.

He encourages a “Yes” vote for the Forest Preserve District Referendum
It will create a Forest Preserve District separate from the County Board. By creating a separate board, this governmental body will make the forest preserve its priority.

Attend RPM meeting Monday Sept. 8th

Well summer is ending but the election continues to heat up. Join us for our next RPM meeting and learn how you can become involved in our area.

We are resuming our Rockford Progressive Meetup meetings for the fall and hope you choose to be a part of it. We will be at the same location but will be meeting the 2nd Monday of the month. (don’t worry, this will not conflict with RPJ- I have worked out the schedule with Stanley)

At next Monday’s meeting we are gathering together with local activists and they will update you on their activities and how you can participate.
